Basic Papercraft Supplies Every Crafter Needs. If you love paper crafting or scrapbooking and are planning to create beautiful handmade projects, here are a few craft tools that will definitely get your creatives juices flowing.
A pair of scissors and a bottle of glue may not just be enough to create a beautiful handmade card. Besides a few packs of cardstock, some patterned paper and embellishments, the craft tools mentioned below will make your crafting journey much more easy and enjoyable.
Being a paper crafter addict myself, the craft supplies that I am sharing below are basically the tools that I used for almost every of my craft projects.
What Basic Papercraft Supplies Does A Beginner Needs?
Starting a new hobby can get expensive, especially when you have to start buying all the different types of tools, to begin with.
When I started to get attracted to papercrafts, I was lucky that my godmother is already addicted to paper crafting. She explained to me what were the basic papercraft supplies that I needed.
Below are a few papercraft tools that I believe all beginners need besides scissors and glue.
Sizzix Paper Punch – Circle, 3/4″, Medium
Punches
Punches come in many different shapes and sizes. I feel that the much-needed punch that every crafter should have is the circular punch. I am sure you would agree when I say there is hardly anyone that could cut out a perfect circle. But with a circle punch, you can get a perfect circular shape every time.
Other types of paper craft punch that would be very useful are the corner and border punch. I would suggest you get one or two corner punch and a few border punches as well.
Poinsettia Holiday 3D Shading Stamps
Stamps
If you are interested in card marking or scrapbooking then you would need some pretty patterned stamps. You don’t have to buy all the different patterns when you are just starting out. What you will need is just some floral patterns (if you are a fan of nature themes like me) and a few stamps with sweet verses or short quotes for example ‘Happy Birthday’ or ‘Best Wishes’
Grand Calibur Die Cutting & Embossing Machine
Die Cutting And Embossing Machine
I wouldn’t be able to make some beautiful cards if I didn’t have a die-cutting and embossing machine. For a beginner, I will suggest a good quality and affordable machine like the Grand Calibur. This machine is perfect to die-cut or embossed cards for your papercraft projects.
If you love crafting outdoors then you would also need a smaller die-cutting and embossing machine. I would suggest getting the Prizm from Spellbinders. It is lightweight so you can carry it anywhere you want. So if you are planning to join a paper craft club and enjoy paper crafting projects with a few friends away from home, the Prizm would be the machine that you need.
Die D-Lites Flower Power Etched Dies
Dies
If you are not a fan of paper craft punch, then I would suggest you get dies instead. Besides patterns from punches are quite limited. But with dies, the choices of patterns are massive. Dies cut out perfect shapes each time it is rolled through a die-cutting machine.
I feel that every paper crafter and scrapbooker needs at least one set of alphabet die. When you have every letter from the alphabet, you can create different greetings and quotes and paste them on your card or scrapbook project.
Journey Cutting Mat
Cutting Mat
For every papercraft projects, there would be a lot of cutting to do. You would need a good cutting mat to avoid damaging your work surface. It is best you get a self-healing cutting mat. Craft knives or cutting blades usually create tiny scratches on the mat each time you cut, but the healing mat would reclose, thus your cutting mat lasts longer.
Retractable Craft Knife
Craft Knife
Buying a good quality craft knife is important in order to get nice straight and accurate cuts each time you cut a card or paper. Due to experience, I would suggest you have 2 craft knives or cutting blades – one only to cut cards or paper and the other to cut any sticky material. The knife that is used to cut sticky material usually get blunts quicker.
Journey Blooms Paper Trimmer
Paper Trimmer
A paper trimmer is great if you want to cut cards into smaller sizes. With a paper trimmer, you would get much more accurate sizes and cuts instead of just measuring and cutting with a pair of scissors or blades.
These are the 7 craft supplies or tools that I believe every paper crater needs to have from the very beginning. Of course, besides the 7 craft tools that I mentioned, you would need some pencils, rulers, gum or glue, sticky tape, colour pencils, scissors, cardstock, patterned papers and embellishments.

Are you a fan of paper crafting too? Which is your favourite paper crafting tool?
I have almost all of these for my scrapbooking hobby! But, I use a lot of paper in my scrapbooks, so it makes sense. Like you, I have someone who has been into scrapbooking longer than me and got me started with the basics. For me, it’s my mom. I’m heading to Florida in a couple of weeks to attend a weekend-long scrapbooking retreat she is hosting. It’s so fun to see how creative people can get with paper, a few tools, and their photos.
A scrapbooking retreat sounds like fun. Would love to attend something like that.

I like handmade greeting cards so much! Receiving a handmade card is a special gift, because of the time and effort someone spent making it. It lets the recipient know just how much you care about them.
I definitely agree with you. It makes you feel more special when you received a handmade card.
